Signal was the result of a collaboration between Emma Hoette and Ben Van Buren. They began their collaboration with some 3662.61 miles between them. Emma in Brooklyn, New York, Ben in Brussels, Belgium. With 6 months of research, conversations, ideas and thoughts exchanged across this distance via technology they arrived in July 2013 side by side Wellfleet MA. Looking out over oceans, expanses of sand, ruins and town history they created an improvisation structure to be performed as a duet between them in four dramatically different locations. The improvisation structure was informed by their own histories as well as their collective history of the research for this project. Each location dictated the starting distance between the two and the paths to be traversed until they were within one another’s reach. At the moment they became close enough to touch they would ask permission – “May I?” Signal is a story of two people knowing one another up close and from a distance, Signal is a performance of histories, Signal explores communication and distance. Signal is an investigation of movement dictated by landscape. Signal tests our perceptions of time and space.
